After the visit
Make the steps after your visit clear.
A plan is easier to use when the next conversation is already clear.
Name the person who answers later questions.
Ask how to send a question about the plan. Find out who reads it, when a reply can be expected, and what happens if that person is away.
Ask how to reach the pharmacist for a medicine question. Keep those details with the treatment plan.
Agree on a review before starting.
- What change will we look for?
- What information will I bring to the review?
- What would lead us to change the plan?
- What will the next review cost?
Use the goal you set at the start. Ask which details the treating person needs in order to judge whether the treatment is helping.
Make an in-person route clear.
If assessing the issue requires an exam or procedure, medical-board guidance calls for referral to an in-person visit; the guidance was checked in September 2026.
Ask who arranges that visit and where the records go. Ask what is charged if the online plan needs to change.
The Federation of State Medical Boards is the group behind this advice. State boards decide which rules apply to your visit.
Sources behind this check
This is advice for state boards about online care and arranging an in-person visit when needed. Ask your state board which rules the service must follow.
